Serj Tankian is an Armenian-American singer, musician, and record producer, best known as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for the American metal band System of a Down. Born in Armenia in 1967 to Armenian parents who emigrated to the United States, Tankian began his musical career playing piano and singing in church choirs. In 1994, he co-founded System of a Down with Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan, quickly becoming one of the most influential bands in alternative metal. His powerful and versatile voice, combined with often politically and socially charged lyrics, contributed to the band's international success. Besides his work with System of a Down, Tankian has enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing several studio albums including "Elect the Dead" (2007), "Imperfect Harmonies" (2010) and "Harakiri" (2012). He is also a political and social activist, dedicated to promoting human rights and peace. Among his most representative songs are "Chop Suey!", "Toxicity", "Aerials" and "B.Y.O.B.".
