Mark Levon Helm (1940-2012) è stato un musicista, cantante e attore statunitense di fama internazionale. Noto soprattutto per essere stato il batterista e voce principale del leggendario gruppo rock canadese The Band, Helm ha contribuito a plasmare l'identità sonora della musica folk-rock degli anni '60 e '70. Nato in Arkansas, Helm iniziò la sua carriera musicale suonando con diversi gruppi locali prima di unirsi a Bob Dylan nel 1965 come batterista per il suo tour mondiale. Nel 1968, Helm fondò The Band insieme ad altri musicisti talentuosi, tra cui Robbie Robertson e Rick Danko. Il gruppo raggiunse la fama internazionale grazie all'album d'esordio del 1969, *Music from Big Pink*, considerato un capolavoro del folk-rock. Helm si distinse per il suo stile vocale potente e rauco, che conferiva ai brani di The Band una carica emotiva unica.
