La formazione originale comprendeva Robbie Robertson (chitarra), Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko e Levon Helm. Considerati uno dei gruppi più influenti della musica rock americana, The Band ha raggiunto la fama negli anni '70 grazie a un sound folk-rock caratterizzato da arrangiamenti orchestrali complessi e testi poetici.
