Brandtson è un gruppo indie rock formatosi a Cleveland, Ohio nel 1996. Inizialmente era un progetto parallelo di Myk Porter, cantante del gruppo hardcore cristiano Six Feet Deep. Porter coinvolse il suo amico Jared Jolley alla batteria. Dopo lo scioglimento di Six Feet Deep, Brandtson divenne una band a tempo pieno con l'aggiunta di Matt Traxler (anch'egli dei Six Feet Deep) alla chitarra e John Sayre al basso. Il loro primo album, *Letterbox*, uscì su Steadfast Records, l'etichetta indipendente di Traxler, e fu poi ripubblicato da Deep Elm Records. Il gruppo pubblicò il singolo *Let's Call It A Day* su Velvet Blue Music e partecipò alla compilation *Volume Two of the Emo Diaries*. Nel 1999 Deep Elm pubblicò *Fallen Star Collection*, seguito nel 2000 dall'EP *Trying to Figure Each Other Out*.
