Data in adozione alla nascita da una madre sconosciuta, Gauthier è stata adottata da una coppia cattolica italiana a Thibodaux, Louisiana. A 15 anni, fuggì di casa e rubò l'auto dei suoi genitori, trascorrendo i successivi anni in centri di riabilitazione per tossicodipendenti, case di accoglienza e vivendo con gli amici; ha festeggiato il suo diciottesimo compleanno in carcere. Lottava ad affrontare la sua omosessualità, usando droghe e alcol. Ha scritto la sua prima canzone a 35 anni.
