Marco Ezechia Lombroso, known as Cesare Lombroso, was an Italian physician, anthropologist, and criminologist (1835-1909). Considered by many scholars as the father of modern criminology, his research focused on the biological nature of crime. Influenced by physiognomy, social Darwinism, and phrenology, Lombroso argued that criminals were individuals with distinctive physical characteristics, inherited or acquired during life. A proponent of positivism, Lombroso was one of the pioneers of criminal studies and founder of criminal anthropology. Among his most important works are 'L'uomo delinquente' (1876) and 'La donna delinquente' (1893). Although his theories are now considered outdated, they had a significant impact on the birth of modern criminology.
