Stratovarius is a Finnish power metal band formed in Helsinki in 1984 by Tuomo Lassila (drums), Staffan Stråhlman (guitar) and John Vihervä (bass). The lineup that achieved international success featured Timo Tolkki on guitar, Timo Kotipelto on vocals, Jens Johansson on keyboards, Jari Kainulainen on bass and Jörg Michael on drums. Tolkki is the primary songwriter and lyricist. Their sound is characterized by epic melodies, virtuoso guitar riffs and a skillful use of keyboards. Notable tracks include *Black Diamond*, *Forever*, *Hunting High and Low*. The albums *Visions* (1997) and *Destiny* (2005) are considered among their most important works.
