Cornershop is a British indie rock band formed in Leicester in 1991 by Tjinder Singh (singer, songwriter, and guitarist), born in Wolverhampton, his brother Avtar Singh (bass guitar and vocals), David Chambers (drums) and Ben Ayres (guitar, keyboards, and tamboura). The first three had previously been members of the Preston-based band General Havoc, who released one single (the "Fast Jaspal EP") in 1991. The band's name originated from a stereotype referring to British Asians who often own street corner stores. Their music is a fusion of Indian music, Britpop, and electronic dance music. Cornershop achieved international success with the 1997 single "Brimful of Asha", a track that blends traditional Indian elements with British pop sounds. The album "When I Was Born for the 7th Time", released in 1998, is considered one of their most important works. Cornershop continues to record and perform, maintaining a loyal fanbase who appreciate their unique and innovative music.
