Maria Antoinette (Maria Antonia Giuseppa Giovanna d'Asburgo-Lorena; Vienna, November 2, 1755 – Paris, October 16, 1793) was the queen consort of France and Navarre from May 10, 1774, to October 1, 1791, and Queen of the French from October 1, 1791, to September 21, 1792, as the wife of Louis XVI. Born in Austria, she was the daughter of Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Her ascension to the French throne was marked by a political marriage with King Louis XVI, intended to strengthen the alliance between France and Austria. During her reign, Maria Antoinette was known for her elegance and luxurious lifestyle, which, however, contributed to fueling social tensions in France. The French Revolution brought an end to her reign, and her life was marked by accusations of treason and corruption. Convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal, Maria Antoinette was guillotined on October 16, 1793.
