The Mountain Goats are an American folk rock band formed in 1991 in Claremont, California, by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Darnielle. The band's name comes from a Screamin' Jay Hawkins song titled "Big Yellow Coat". For much of its history, Darnielle has been the only stable member of The Mountain Goats, collaborating with a diverse group of musicians in the studio and on tour.
