Bernard Lavilliers è un cantautore francese nato a Saint-Étienne nel 1946. Proveniente da una famiglia modesta, iniziò ad appassionarsi alla musica fin dall'età di quattro anni. Dopo aver lavorato in fabbrica, si iscrisse al Partito Comunista per difendere i propri ideali e nel 1965 partì per il Brasile, esperienza che segnò profondamente la sua visione del mondo. Rientro in Francia lo portò ad essere considerato renitente alla leva e incarcerato per un anno. Iniziò a cantare nei cabaret e nel 1967 uscì il suo primo singolo. Nel 1968 pubblicò il suo primo album, intitolato semplicemente "Lavilliers", che divenne poi il suo nome d'arte. Nel corso degli anni '70 ottenne successo con album come "Les poètes" (1972), "Le Stéphanois" (1975) e soprattutto "Les Barbares" (1976). Quest'ultimo lo consacrò come uno dei cantautori francesi più importanti. Lavilliers è noto per le sue canzoni che spesso trattano temi sociali, politici e di viaggio. Tra i suoi brani più rappresentativi ricordiamo "Le Grand Bleu", "La Ballade de la rue des Amants" e "Les Barbares". Nel 1992 cantò insieme a Léo Ferré alla fête de l'Humanité. Nel 2004 pubblicò l'album "Carnets de bord", un inno ai viaggi, e nel 2005 uscì il libro 'Bernard Lavilliers, Escales' di Gert-Peter Bruch.
