Il gruppo, composto da Adam Schlesinger (voce, chitarra), Chris Collingwood (chitarra, voce), Jody Porter (basso) e Brian Young (batteria), è noto per il suo sound pop-rock orecchiabile e le liriche spesso ironiche e autoironiche. Il loro successo più grande è stato "Stacey's Mom", singolo del 2003 che ha raggiunto la posizione numero 1 nelle classifiche alternative statunitensi e ha contribuito a far conoscere al pubblico internazionale il gruppo. Tra gli altri brani rappresentativi ricordiamo "Red Tide" (dal loro album di debutto "Ugly Radio") e "Hackensack" (dall'album "Welcome Interstate Managers").
