What is a youth?
Impetuous fire.
What is a maid?
Ice and desire.
The world wags on
A rose will bloom,
it then will fade
So does a youth.
So does the fairest maid.
Comes a time when one sweet smile
Has its season for awhile
Then Love’s in love with me
Some may think only to marry.
Others will tease and tarry.
Mine is the very best parry,
Cupid he rules us all.
Caper the caper; sing me the song
Death will come soon to hush us along
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall,
Love is a task and it never will pall.
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall,
Cupid he rules us all.
(20 second flute interlude)
A rose will bloom, it then will fade.
So does a youth.
So does the fairest maid.
Nino Rota (Giovanni Rota Rinaldi, 1911-1979) was one of the most important and prolific Italian film composers of all time. Born in Milan, Rota studied composition at the Milan Conservatory with maestro Ildebrando Pizzetti. His musical career began in the theater world, composing music for operas and theatrical productions. In 1940 he entered the world of cinema, collaborating with directors such as Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, and Vittorio De Sica. His film scores are characterized by an evocative and melancholic atmosphere, often enriched by memorable melodies that have left an indelible mark on popular culture. Among his most celebrated works are the soundtracks for films like *La dolce vita*, *8½*, *The Leopard* and *Amarcord*. Rota won numerous awards, including two posthumous Oscars for the soundtracks of *The Godfather* (1972) and *The Godfather Part II* (1974). Besides film scores, Rota also composed operas, chamber music, and concertos. His influence on Italian and international cinema has been immense, contributing to defining the sonic identity of auteur cinema.
