Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist and politically active punk rock collective that operates under strict anonymity. Based in Moscow, the group is known for flash mobs and impromptu performances through which they express political provocations against the political and institutional establishment. Among the themes addressed: the situation of women in Russia and, more recently, the electoral campaigns of Vladimir Putin. In March 2012, three members of the collective were arrested for performing an unauthorized performance at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior against Putin. Charges of "hooliganism and inciting religious hatred" led to a short and media-covered trial, with the sentence convicting them to two years in prison. The case attracted international attention due to accusations of harsh treatment during detention and the threat of severe penalties against dissent in Russia. The performance was contested by part of Russian society as an offense to religious sensitivity and traditions, with the public intervention of Patriarch Kirill I who condemned the blasphemous act. Among their most representative songs: "Punk Prayer", "Make Way for Pussy Riot" and "Revolution".
