Joy Division were a British post-punk band formed in 1977 in Salford, Greater Manchester. The band consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals), Bernard Sumner (guitar), Peter Hook (bass) and Stephen Morris (drums). Considered one of the most influential bands of the post-punk movement, Joy Division characterized their sound with dark atmospheres, introspective lyrics and intense musicality. Curtis, known for his theatrical performances and poetic writing, addressed themes such as depression, alienation and social disillusionment. After a series of successful EPs and singles, Joy Division released their debut album, *Unknown Pleasures*, in 1979, considered a classic of the post-punk genre. Tragically, Ian Curtis committed suicide on May 18, 1980, shortly before the start of a tour in the United States.
