Es ist Mitternacht. Aus einer gräulichen Grube guckt ein modriger Spielmann - den rechten Zeigefinger in seine Schnute gestreckt - durch eine jämmerliche Fuge 'seines? Erdwalls in die Lüste von Campo Santo. Es war ihm, als säße er, als fahriger Totenmann befrackt, in der Grube eines Sterbenden. Der Tod hängt ihm an den Knochen und 'dennoch muss ich hinter die Friedhofsmauern sehen? - sprach's und richtete sich auf. Umringt von seltsam sitzenden Marionetten wagt er es, sein Händchen durch die Rinne zu strecken und nach einer verwaisten Schippe zu greifen, die Cambiasso, der Totengräber, nebst nass gewordenem Schabau zur Seite legte. Mit einem faulig weichen Holzleierkasten auf dem Rücken rankt er sich auf, um nach einfältigem Schielen und schnödem Kauern in der Totenlade aus dem Grüblein zu steigen und sich - mit dem Spaten in der Hand - davon zu machen. Das Gerippe geht dem Ausgang zu und bleibt nicht ungesühnt.
