Der Werkelmann lehnt an einer Eiche am Ufer des Sumpfes und verfolgt die schwindenden Luftblasen des welkenden Gaules, die wie putzige Seifenblasen in dieser verschrobenen Nacht zu verschwinden drohen. Als er in den Spiegel des Sumpfes blickt und dabei seinem Antlitz gegenübersitzt, erschallt die Stimme Bertrams, der den Werkelmann an sein kurioses Spiegelbild erinnert. ?Werkelmann, sieht du dich in der Luch??, fragt Bertram. Der Werkelmann lehnt sich vor, blickt in den nächtlich schöner aussehenden Morast und schreit entsetzt auf. ?Der Teufel sieht mich an - ich bin ein Teufelsmann.? Er legte sein Köpfchen ab und erblickte stattdessen im Spiegel des Teufels Haupt auf seinem Gerippe. War er ein Teufel? War er der Teufel? Starr und verstört hockt er am Tümpel und flennt ins grüne Meer.
