Der graue Herbst hält Einzug auf diesem wunderlichen Totenacker. Ein eiskalter Sturmwind überfiel die Gräber all der lebenden Toten. Verdutzt hocken die fleischarmen Skelette im nassen Laub, das sich in den letzten Stunden zu seltsamen Totenbettchen zusammen getragen hatte. Die Bucklige lehnt - in eine dunkle Decke gehüllt - an ihrer stehend in den Boden gerammten Totenlade. Bertram, der Knecht, lümmelt auf dem Steindeckel der Lewski-Gruft und liebäugelt mit einer Flasche Wodka, die die Totengräber irrtümlich zurück gelassen hatten. Nur einige Gräber weiter kniet ein trübseliger Werkelmann vor dem verregneten Wimmerkasten des Requiempianisten, sein Köpfchen liegt daneben und schielt in das verdrießliche Totenbett, das er am liebsten gar nicht erst verlassen hätte. Zwischen den Grabsteinen, als wäre es ein Kontrollgang, schreitet Kezman voran. Der Werkelmann blieb noch ein Weilchen am Leben - doch der Tod klopfte an.
DIE BUCKLIGE
BERTRAM, DER KNECHT
Er spürte ein seltsames Pochen - der Tod klopfte an.
Sein Schädel griente Fratzen - die letzte Nacht begann.
Die Puppen starrten Löcher.
Die Gräber waren verweht.
Der Spielmann kniete achtsam,
sein Kleid war obsolet.
Er blieb noch ein Weilchen am Leben.
Der Tote blickte nach vorn.
Der Wind blies zuweilen daneben.
Der Tote wär' gern erfroren.
KEZMAN (schreit)
Er spürte die bittere Neige -
der Sensemann schritt auf und ab.
Er schielte ins Totenbett feige -
und klapperte klipp-klapp.
KEZMAN (flüstert)
Der Tote faulte vorwärts,
es brabbelte aus ihm - und dann:
Es brach ein letzter Abend an!
KEZMAN (schreit)
Der Tote faulte vorwärts.
Ein Käfer zog ihn in Bann.
Er hegte sein loses Köpfchen -
und murmelte angst und bang.
